Castelnau de M. was the first of the four Tarn-region bastide villages we visited.

“Bastide” is a grid-like layout of streets and buildings, often centred around a castle or great house, with once-controlled access into the town by gates. The houses on the outer ring are built into the town’s defensive ramparts.
